Why This Workshop Is Important

The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre resulted in widespread destruction of homes, businesses, and generational wealth. In addition to physical devastation, the massacre disrupted inheritance and long-term asset accumulation within Greenwood families.

In the decades that followed, urban renewal policies further destabilized the community. Large portions of the historic Greenwood District were cleared for highway construction and redevelopment, resulting in additional displacement, loss of land ownership, and interruption of wealth-building opportunities for Black families.

Research, including findings from The Color of Wealth: The Destruction of Greenwood and Tulsa’s Legacy of Loss, demonstrates the lasting economic impact of that destruction. Nearly a century later, Black families in Tulsa hold a fraction of the wealth of White families. These disparities reflect both historical violence and ongoing structural barriers to wealth preservation.

Today, preventable loss continues when property is not properly titled, when estates are not planned, or when families must navigate probate without preparation.

This workshop focuses on prevention, clarity, and protection.

What Will Be Covered

Participants will receive education and guidance on the following topics:

  • An overview of probate and how the process works
  • The importance of having a legally valid will
  • Property titling and common ownership issues
  • Foundational steps toward estate planning and asset protection

All information will be presented with time allocated for questions.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is intended for:

  • Members of First Baptist Church North Tulsa
  • Members of the thirteen surviving Greenwood-area churches
  • Descendants who own property or expect to inherit property
  • Families seeking clarity about wills, probate, and estate planning
